KUCHING: Fear replaced belief when England stood on the brink of history, only to watch their World Cup dream collapse in the final minutes against Argentina.

The Three Lions were just minutes away from reaching their first men’s World Cup final since 1966 after Anthony Gordon fired them ahead in the 55th minute at Atlanta Stadium.

But Argentina, the reigning world champions, refused to surrender.

Enzo Fernandez levelled the match with a powerful strike in the 85th minute before Lautaro Martinez delivered the decisive blow with a 92nd-minute header — both goals created by Lionel Messi.

England’s collapse raised questions over Thomas Tuchel’s tactical decisions after the German coach opted for a defensive approach once his side took the lead.

Instead of continuing to pressure Argentina, England retreated, bringing on defenders Ezri Konsa, Dan Burn and Nico O’Reilly while leaving attacking options such as Marcus Rashford and Ivan Toney until stoppage time.

The decision proved costly as Argentina seized control of the match, with their experience and composure once again shining on football’s biggest stage.

For England, it was another painful chapter in their long search for World Cup glory.

They had the opportunity to make history, but when the pressure arrived, Argentina showed the mentality of champions while England allowed fear to dictate their final moments.

The defeat also highlighted a familiar struggle for England in major tournaments, the inability to maintain attacking intent when facing the world’s best teams.

In the end, the dream of bringing football home remained just that — a dream. England were not defeated by a lack of talent, but by a moment of fear when courage was needed most.

Against a champion side like Argentina, hesitation proved costly, and the Three Lions paid the ultimate price for surrendering belief when history was within reach.

Perhaps that will be England’s biggest lesson from this defeat. Against the very best, protecting a lead is rarely enough.

World Cup finals are earned through bravery, belief and conviction not by retreating when destiny is within touching distance.

England’s challenge now is to ensure fear never again becomes the reason another golden opportunity slips away.
