KUCHING: A fire tore through a factory at the Muara Tabuan Light Industrial Park on Thursday (Aug 7), gutting nearly 70 per cent of the premises and sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky.
The blaze, which erupted around 10.45am, is believed to have originated from a cluster of containers used as temporary workers’ quarters.
It quickly spread to the rear section of the factory, where goods for a supermarket were packed and stored.
Despite swift action by the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), the flames ravaged the affected area, measuring approximately 100 by 100 square feet.
No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident.
Firefighters from the Tabuan Jaya, Padungan and Batu Lintang stations were promptly dispatched to the scene following an emergency call.
It was reported that firefighting efforts are concentrated on the left side of the building, where various stored items are still burning.
Foam was used to help extinguish the flames, and the fire was brought under control at 12.19pm.
At the time of writing, overhaul works are still being carried out to prevent any reignition.
The cause of the fire and losses incurred are still under investigation.
