MIRI: Police arrested 30 individuals and seized methamphetamine in a three-day anti-narcotics operation across the city, underscoring a stepped-up enforcement posture against drug abuse and trafficking in the district.
The operation, Op Tapis Khas Sarawak, was conducted from Feb 26 to 28 by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department.
Those detained comprise 18 local men, five local women and seven foreign men. Investigators have opened a total of 43 cases arising from the sweep.
Two cases are being probed under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for trafficking-related offences, 11 under Section 12(3) for possession, and 30 under Section 15(1)(a) for drug use.
Police also seized methamphetamine with an estimated gross weight of 14 grammes, valued at about RM1,562.
In a related development, officers arrested an additional individual who was the subject of an outstanding warrant after failing to appear before the Miri Magistrate’s Court in a drug-related case.
All the suspects will be remanded to facilitate further investigations. Police said statements from witnesses are being recorded to complete case files before referral to the Deputy Public Prosecutor.
The operation was led by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department as part of an ongoing strategy to disrupt supply chains and deter demand.
