MIRI: More than 2,200 people here have benefited from a government-backed scheme that helps low-income families and young people secure affordable motorcycle licences, offering safer mobility and new economic opportunities.
The MyLesen B2 programme, rolled out by Pusat Khidmat Rakyat Parlimen Miri under the Kerajaan Perpaduan MADANI, has significantly reduced the cost of obtaining a Class B2 motorcycle licence from around RM750 to just RM250, providing a much-needed lifeline for B40 households struggling with the rising costs of living.
“This programme eases the burden on families while opening up safer, more reliable means of transport for young people, rural students and even senior citizens,” said Ketua Angkatan Muda Keadilan Miri, Christopher Jemat Amie.
The organisers said that many participants who secured their licences last year now rely on their motorcycles to commute to work, attend school or run daily errands.
The initiative has also spurred growth in the local gig economy, particularly in the food and parcel delivery sector, creating a source of income for new riders.
The programme is particularly impactful in rural areas, where limited access to public transport leaves many residents dependent on motorcycles.
For students in outlying villages, a licence means independence and a safer journey to school, while for older residents, it provides greater freedom and accessibility to urban services.
Public support for the initiative is strong, with more than 1,300 people turning up at a recent MyLesen B2 gathering hosted at Eastwood Valley Golf and Country Club, underscoring the scheme’s popularity and relevance.
Christopher praised Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the unity government for their commitment to policies with direct benefits for ordinary Malaysians, while also commending the Miri Parliamentary Service Centre for ensuring the scheme reaches those most in need.
“As we’ve seen, a driving licence is more than a piece of plastic; it is a passport to opportunity. I urge more young people and families in Miri’s B40 group to seize this chance for a brighter, safer future,” he said.
