LONG LAMA: Twenty-nine river safety-related initiatives have been implemented by the Sarawak River Board (LSS) since 2024, as part of ongoing efforts to promote public awareness on river cleanliness and safety.
Deputy Minister of Transport (Riverine and Marine), Datuk Henry Harry Jinep, said the initiatives had reached more than 5,781 participants from various communities across the state.
“This effort reflects the government’s strong commitment to safeguarding river users,” he said.
He said this during the closing ceremony of the River Cleanliness and Safety Awareness programme held at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (C) Kee Tee recently.
Henry also commended the programme, organised by LSS, which drew over 400 residents from Long Lama.
It was a collective effort to strengthen environmental awareness and river safety culture among the participants.
Throughout the programme, talks were delivered by agencies such as the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), Department of Agriculture, and Marudi District Council (MDM), covering topics like waterway safety, river cleanliness management, solid waste disposal and human-wildlife conflicts, particularly those involving crocodiles.
At the same event, Henry also presented 60 life jackets to local residents, underscoring efforts to boost safety awareness and practices among river users.
Meanwhile, in a symbolic gesture of preserving biodiversity and sustaining fishery resources, more than 10,000 fish fry were released into the Baram River.
