BINTULU: Three people were killed, and five others sustained injuries in a two-vehicle collision along the Bintulu-Samalaju Coastal Road this morning (Mar 11).
A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the accident happened at around 6.50 am, involving a Perodua Alza and a three-tonne lorry.
Firefighters from Kidurong and Samalaju stations were dispatched to the scene, about 29km away, following a distress call.
Upon arrival, the team discovered five victims trapped in the Alza and extrication works were carried out using rescue tools.
Three victims, identified as 22-year-old Ariana Juana Helda, 39-year-old Simon Hiu and 44-year-old Nur Azalea Zakiah Jiben, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their bodies were later handed over to the police for further action.
Two other men in the Alza, aged 50 and 52, sustained severe injuries. The extent of their injuries was not immediately known.
Meanwhile, the 41-year-old lorry driver sustained a broken leg while his two attendants escaped with minor injuries.
All injured victims were rushed to the hospital for further medical treatment.
Once the situation was deemed safe, the team ended the operation at 8.18 am.
