KUCHING: The Sarawak Teachers’ Union (STU) has outlined three key priorities for educators as the new school term approaches, emphasising physical and mental readiness, proper preparation, and a strong student-centric approach.

In a New Year 2026 message, the union said these focus areas were crucial to ensuring a smooth and effective start to the academic year across schools in Sarawak.

STU’s Secretary-General, Chung Fui San, said the arrival of a New Year represented more than just a change in the calendar; it symbolised a fresh start and a renewed commitment to their noble mission of shaping the future leaders of Sarawak.

“We encourage all educators to embrace 2026 with a positive mindset and invigorated spirit. After a well-deserved break, it is time to channel our energy toward excellence in the classroom and the holistic development of our students.

“We urge teachers to ensure they are physically and mentally prepared for the upcoming academic year. A healthy teacher is the foundation of a healthy classroom,” she said in a statement today.

On preparation, the union urged educators to make full use of the period before school reopened to complete lesson planning, teaching materials and classroom management strategies to support effective teaching and learning.

“Success in the classroom begins with proper planning. Thorough preparation will ensure a smooth transition for students when they return to school,” she added.

The third priority highlighted by STU is maintaining a student-centric approach, with teachers encouraged to welcome students into a safe, conducive and inspiring learning environment.

“Our schools are ready because our teachers are ready. We must be prepared to welcome our students with open arms, providing them with a safe, conducive and inspiring environment to learn and grow,” she said.

Chung also took the opportunity to thank teachers and school staff throughout Sarawak for their dedication and resilience.

“Teachers are the backbone of our education system. Let us continue working together in 2026 to elevate the standards of education in Sarawak,” she said.

STU remains committed to advocating for the welfare of teachers and ensuring that the voices of Sarawakian educators continue to be heard at all levels.

The union extended its New Year greetings to all teachers, educators and school staff, wishing them a successful and meaningful year ahead.
