MADRID: Three people have died and three others were injured after a giant wave swept through a natural swimming pool on the western coast of the Spanish island of Tenerife, German Press Agency (dpa) reported Sunday, citing authorities.

Several people were dragged into the sea during the incident, and one person reported missing is still being sought, the Canary Islands emergency services said.

Authorities said the confirmed fatalities include two men and a woman. One of the men was 35, the woman 55, while the age of the third victim has not yet been disclosed. No further identifying details were released.

A woman suffered cardiac arrest during the incident at the cliffs of Los Gigantes in the Santiago del Teide area but was resuscitated by paramedics and airlifted to a hospital.

According to media reports, several people swept away by the waves managed to reach the shore on their own. State broadcaster RTVE reported that local authorities had issued warnings about high waves on Sunday.

The incident comes about a month after a series of giant waves on November 8 swept multiple people into the sea, including many tourists, mainly from France. Three people died and 15 were injured in those incidents along Tenerife’s coast. – BERNAMA-dpa
