SARIKEI: The Sarawak Government has greenlit the implementation of three major infrastructure projects in the Central Region.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, said the projects will not only benefit the local population but also have a positive impact on Sarawakians as a whole.

He added that the funding for these projects will be pursued under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), particularly through the Rajang Delta Development Agency (RADDA).

“We will seek funding for the Bintangor-Sarikei Road through RMK-13. As for the Parit Bugis bridge, we are planning the area as a modern agricultural zone, no longer just traditional farming as in the Sungai Baji Agro Park,” he said during the launching ceremony of the Batang Rajang Bridge here today (May 17).

He said the success of these projects also depends on the harmony and unity of the people of Sarawak, which is a key strength for the state government in securing allocations.

“Sarawak is strong because our politics is stable through Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS),” he added.

Earlier, an appeal for three additional development projects was made to Abang Johari as part of efforts to boost infrastructure growth in Sarawak’s central region.

Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh said the proposed projects are vital to completing the road network and strengthening economic connectivity in the Sarikei and Mukah Divisions.

“The first project proposed is the upgrading of the 14-kilometre Bintangor–Sarikei road from Public Works Department (PWD) standard U3 to U5. The road serves as the main route linking Sarikei to Bintangor and onwards to Sibu, making it a vital artery for transportation and logistics.

“The second request involves the construction of a new 300-metre bridge across Batang Rajang to connect Tanah Putih/Sarikei to Parit Bugis, Bukit Huang, and Muara Payang. The proposed bridge aims to benefit the multicultural communities in the area, which include Malays, Bugis, Iban, and Chinese residents.

“The area was once known for traditional agricultural activity and has now been identified as a strategic location for the development of an agropark.

“It still produces agricultural output and holds great potential for modern, planned agro-based development,” he said.

He added that the third request is for the construction of an 11-kilometre road from Jalan Pasi to the Pan Borneo Highway, built to JKR U3 standards.

“The route is expected to facilitate access to the Tanjung Manis Port and benefit road users coming from Betong, Sri Aman, Bintulu, and the interior regions of Kapit, Song, and Kanowit,” Len said.
