KUCHING: Julau is poised for a boost in infrastructure, with three major road upgrading projects approved for the area.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the first project involves upgrading Jalan Nanga Lasi, Balut, and Suchong at an estimated cost of RM92 million.
The second project covers the improvement of Jalan Lijan, which serves many residents in the area, with a budget of RM80 million.
The third project will see the upgrading of Jalan Nanga Entaih, Rh Sang Lasa, Kemalih, and 13 spur roads in Pakan, at a cost of about RM150 million.
“So, my birthday gift to all of you is development projects worth a total of RM322 million. This will improve Julau’s infrastructure and it’s not just empty talk,” he said during the launch of the Nanga Lasi Bridge in Julau today.
He expressed full support for the proposed road upgrading projects as it could shorten travel time to and from Meluan, in addition to the construction of Batang Lupar 1 and Batang Lupar 2 bridges, with the second bridge linking Lingga to Sri Aman.

“This means from Betong to Sri Aman will take just 20 minutes, and with this six-kilometre stretch plus existing roads (Meluan), it’s about 30 kilometres to Betong.
“Travelling at 60 km per hour, that’s only 30 minutes to reach Betong. From Betong to Sri Aman is another 20 minutes; so about 50 minutes in total.
“Sri Aman has two routes: one to Sri Aman town itself, and another to Sebuyau via Batang Lupar 1, which is just a short drive. From there, Kuching is about two and a half hours away.
“No more remote areas. This means Meluan is effectively part of Kuching,” he said.
He added that with this improved connectivity, residents of Meluan and surrounding longhouses could travel to Kuching and return home within a day.
“It will open up the area, create new market opportunities, and allow our products to be sold and even exported.
“By 2030, Kuching to Meluan could be just two and a half hours,” he said.
Regarding the Nanga Lasi Bridge project, it entails building a new 96-metre steel bridge to replace the existing suspension bridge, benefiting an estimated 2,250 residents at a cost of RM4.7 million.
The bridge will enhance connectivity between Julau Town and major urban centres such as Sarikei and Sibu, as well as nearby villages along the corridor.
This improved accessibility is expected to drive socioeconomic growth, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for the local community.
