SIBU: A late-night immigration sweep ended with three foreign men in custody after enforcement officers uncovered suspected immigration and migrant smuggling offences on Monday (Jan 19).
The Sarawak Immigration Department said the arrests were made during ‘Ops Serkap’, conducted along Jalan Sibu-Sarikei and Jalan Tanjung Genting.
“Three individuals intercepted and checked during the operation were identified as Indonesian men.
“Further inspection found they were suspected of committing offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 (ATIPSOM),” the department said.
All three were detained to facilitate investigations under Section 6(1)(c) and Section 56(1)(d) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, in addition to Sections 26A and 26J of ATIPSOM 2007.
Immigration officers also seized a white Perodua Alza and RM3,000 in cash believed to be linked to the offences.
The department stated that enforcement operations will continue to be intensified, warning that no leniency will be shown towards any party who flouts Malaysia’s immigration laws.
