SELANGAU: Swift action by three local men saved their longhouse along Jalan Selangau-Mukah from a major fire destruction last night (Dec 8).
A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firefighters from Selangau station were dispatched to Rh Alat Mukan at Bukit Dinding, about 17km away, after receiving a distress call at 7.16 pm.
Realising the fire, the men quickly grabbed three fire extinguishers and acted quickly to extinguish the flames as well as prevent it from spreading.
The heroes are identified as 37-year-old Harry Galau, 38-year-old Jenang Bundan, and 50-year-old Tuan Nyalin, all longhouse residents who acted selflessly to protect their community.
When the firefighters arrived, they found the flames had affected the ceiling, walls, and sofa at one of the doors’ living room that was in the middle of the longhouse.
The team only monitored the situation and carried out overhaul works, which included inspecting and removing smouldering debris from the ceiling of the longhouse.
Once the situation was deemed safe, the team ended the operation at 8.22pm.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
