SIBU: Dangerous ‘wheelie’ stunts landed three teenage motorcyclists in police custody during an anti-street racing operation dubbed ‘Ops Motosikal (Samseng Jalanan)’.

The boys, aged between 14 and 16, were arrested after they were allegedly caught performing the dangerous manoeuvres along Jalan Baru Sibu Jaya on Saturday, endangering both themselves and other road users.

Sibu police said they are being investigated under Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous riding.

Upon conviction, the offence provides for a maximum fine of RM15,000,
imprisonment for a term of up to five years, and licence disqualification
for a term of up to five years.

The six-hour operation, carried out by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division, resulted in seven motorcycles seized under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987 to facilitate further investigations and documentation over various offences.

Police also inspected 30 motorcycles and 35 individuals throughout the operation, issuing a total of 84 traffic summonses for offences under the Road Transport Act 1987.

Among them are riding without a valid licence, expired road tax, lack of insurance coverage, illegal structural and exhaust modifications, missing licence plates, failure to wear helmets, bald tyres, faulty brakes and other traffic-related violations.

Sibu police urged parents and guardians to play a more proactive role in monitoring their children’s movements and to ensure they do not allow them to ride motorcycles without valid driving licences.

Proper parental supervision and guidance are crucial in preventing youth from becoming involved in illegal street racing and dangerous riding activities that could have serious consequences for themselves and other road users.

Enforcement operations targeting illegal street racing and street hooliganism will continue to be intensified to safeguard the safety of road users.
