Three weeks after brazen robbery, cops arrest three

KUCHING: An armed gang robbery case that unfolded along Jalan Song Thian Cheok here late last month has been cracked, with police arresting three local men believed to have carried out the attack.

The suspects, all in their 20s, were picked up in two separate operations at around 2:45 am and 10:15 am on Wednesday (June 17).

Police personnel confiscate the white Proton Saga FLX believed to have been used during the robbery.

It followed investigations into the robbery, which was reported shortly after midnight on May 31.

Kuching Police Chief, ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, said background checks found that two of the three suspects have prior criminal records.

Also seized from them were a white Proton Saga FLX believed to have been used during the robbery, three phones comprising an iPhone 11 Pro and a Samsung Galaxy A17, as well as clothing suspected to have been worn by the men during the commission of the crime.

“The seized items are believed to be linked to the robbery and will assist in further investigations,” he said.

Alexson stated that the suspects have been remanded for seven days after the Magistrate’s Court approved the police’s application to facilitate further investigations.

The case is being investigated under Sections 395 and 397 of the Penal Code for committing gang robbery while armed with a weapon.

If convicted, the offence carries a jail term of up to 20 years and is also punishable with whipping.

Members of the public are advised to remain vigilant by strengthening security measures at their homes, including installing CCTV cameras and alarm systems, and ensuring doors and gates are securely locked, particularly at night.
