LONDON: Manchester United co-owner, Jim Ratcliffe, has pledged to give manager Ruben Amorim three years to prove himself, insisting there will be no “knee-jerk” decisions despite the club’s ongoing struggles.
Amorim, appointed in November 2024, has faced constant speculation over his future following a disappointing first season that saw United finish 15th in the Premier League — their worst since 1974 — and lose the Europa League final to Tottenham.
This season, United sit 10th after seven games, with only one win in their last four outings, though a 2-0 victory over Sunderland briefly eased pressure on the Portuguese coach.
“He hasn’t had the best of seasons,” Ratcliffe said on The Business podcast. “Ruben needs to demonstrate he’s a great coach over three years. You can’t run Manchester United based on knee-jerk reactions.”
Ratcliffe, who owns just under 30 per cent of the club and oversees football operations, also defended cost-cutting measures at Old Trafford, saying they were necessary to restore financial health and competitiveness. — AFP
