KUCHING: With sustainability and thrifting gaining traction among young Sarawakians, local creative platform Seni Kita is set to launch its first-ever thrift edition on May 24 to 25 themed Think Thrift, taking place at HAUS KCH, Yun Phin Building, here from 1:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
The two-day event aims to promote eco-conscious consumerism while encouraging the culture of sharing within the Kuching community, with visitors able to expect a curated thrift market, a styling photo booth, a karaoke corner, live performances, and interactive activities such as spin-the-bottle.
Programme coordinator Christy Yang said the idea stemmed from repeated community requests over the past two years.
“Thrifting has become a popular trend among young people in Kuching, it is more than just affordable shopping, it’s a way to promote sustainability, support local families, and build a culture of sharing,” she said.
Yang added that a highlight of the event is the Pasar Seni Kita thrift market, featuring 12 local vendors including Ta-men, Thrifty Treasures, Preloved by Joyce, and Mars Lets Go.
Shoppers can browse through a wide variety of preloved fashion, accessories, and home goods.
“In the run-up to the event, we are also running a public donation drive, calling on the community to contribute gently-used clothing, accessories, household items, and trinkets.
“Proceeds from the sales of these donations will go towards supporting youth-led creative programmes at HAUS KCH.
“Donations can be dropped off on May 17, 21, and 22 at designated times, by appointment.
“Entertainment features include Mighty Desk 2.0, an indie music showcase presented in collaboration with AOK Records and headlined by Steff Fleur,” she added.
She said the performance takes place on May 24 from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm, with tickets priced at RM20 and on May 25, and poetry lovers can enjoy Word of Mouth, a spoken word session presented in partnership with Wordsmiths of Kuching.
“Visitors can also try their hand at winning prizes through the crowd-favourite spin-the-bottle activity, available daily at 1 pm, 4 pm, and 7 pm.
“Meanwhile, those looking to make memories can capture their outfit at the live styling booth, with Polaroid prints available for RM15,” she added.
Seni Kita, which debuted in July 2022, is a grassroots arts initiative championed by HAUS KCH, aimed at enriching the local arts ecosystem through community engagement and creative collaboration.
