KUCHING: Public Health, Housing and Local Government Deputy Minister Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee has expressed full support for Sarawak’s plan to send local youths for officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom.

He said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s move is a strategic step towards strengthening Sarawak’s human capital in security and defence, particularly in border protection and marine defence within the South China Sea.

“This forward-looking initiative is not only timely but also crucial.

“The professional and world-class military training at Sandhurst will undoubtedly equip Sarawakian youths with the discipline, leadership, and strategic thinking essential for modern defense roles,” he said in a statement.

Tiang also backed a recent suggestion by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi to revive the historic Sarawak Rangers, calling it a step that would further instil pride and purpose among young Sarawakians.

“The legacy and spirit of the Sarawak Rangers should be reawakened as a proud symbol of our local heritage in national defence.

“Their revival, in tandem with the Sandhurst initiative, can instill in our youth a deeper sense of purpose and belonging in serving the state and nation,” he said.

He further proposed that the Sarawak government consider extending these scholarship opportunities to students from various educational backgrounds, including those with the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).

“Historically, members of the Chinese community have been underrepresented in uniformed services such as the police and military, often due to cultural perceptions or limited pathways.

“The offer of such scholarships would certainly attract more Chinese youths to consider careers in our security and defense forces,” he added.

Tiang expressed optimism that broadening access to the programme would help promote inclusivity while empowering more Sarawakians to take part in safeguarding the state’s future.

“Sarawak must continue to lead by example in shaping a society that values service, unity, and excellence. This initiative is a bold step in that direction,” he said.
