SIBU: Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee has called on the people of Sibu to continue building the town with their dreams, passion and commitment.

He said that some Sibu leaders have recently expressed disappointment, suggesting that the town’s prospects seem gloomy.

“I think that should not be the attitude. As you all know, yesterday, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas stated that under the 12th Malaysian Plan, we have 17 road projects in Sibu worth RM825 million.

“Additionally, our Premier has announced an allocation of RM500 million for the Bukit Assek Redevelopment Plan. Altogether, that is roughly RM1.3 billion in investment for Sibu.

“These facts are more than enough to debunk the myth that Sibu receives no development focus or attention from the Sarawak government,” he said during the media appreciation dinner which was attended by more than 30 media practitioner here, Sunday night (Jan 12).

Tiang, who is also the Pelawan assemblyman, urged Sibu leaders from all sectors of society to work together.

“We should continue to come up with creative ideas. Everyone has their own specialties and strengths in their respective fields, and I believe it is our generation’s responsibility to plan and build a brighter future for the next generation.

“Just like our forefathers, especially the Chinese who came all the way from China. When they arrived, do you think they saw infrastructure? Highways? Electricity? Water supply? No, they saw nothing but forests and jungles. Everything was very basic.

“But they never gave up. Our forefathers, together with other races, built Sibu from nothing,” he said.

“So, this is not the time for us to dwell on disappointments. We should remain hopeful and continue building Sibu with our dreams, passion and commitment,” he stressed.
