KUCHING: The Sarawak Timber Association (STA) has expressed its appreciation for the state government’s ongoing efforts to amend the Sarawak Labour Ordinance (SLO) and collaborate with federal agencies to enhance the SLO.

STA honorary secretary Wong Ting Chung in a statement today (Apr 4) highlighted the proposal for a provision requiring prior consultation for future amendments to the SLO.

This was in response to criticisms from the Sarawak Bank Employees Union (Union) regarding the state government’s alleged lack of initiative in this area, clarified recently by Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala.

“As an industry, we earnestly seek the support of all stakeholders, including the Union, in rallying behind the state government as they diligently tackle the crucial issues that lie at the heart of the state government.

“It is imperative to acknowledge the state government’s steadfast commitment and forward-thinking measures in addressing and overcoming future challenges, specifically pertaining to the welfare and advancement of our workers,” he said.

Wong also praised the state government for its value and foresight embedded in its proposal for a consultation provision within the SLO.

In this regard, STA reaffirmed its support for the state government’s initiatives aimed at protecting workers’ rights and fostering progress and prosperity within Sarawak.
