MOTHER’S Day, celebrated annually in May, is more than just a physical celebration of mothers; it is an opportunity to recognise their countless sacrifices which are often overlooked by many.
This special day serves as an opportunity for individuals around the world to express their love, show gratitude, and honour the immense efforts mothers put into raising their families.
In a conversation with Sarawak Tribune, individuals from various walks of life shared how they celebrate Mother’s Day with sincerity and joy.

Nur Sueilayana Zulkanaen Abdullah, 18, Student:
This year, my siblings and I have created a heartfelt video message for our mom and will show it to her first thing in the morning. I have also drawn a family portrait and framed it.
My mom always makes time to listen to me, even when she’s busy. I feel sorry for any time I may have made her sad, and I promise to be a better child.
Without my mom, I wouldn’t be who I am today.

Melissa Ann Cox, 25, Student:
This year, I will celebrate Mother’s Day by giving my mom a special gift and treating her to a meal. I will also surprise her with flowers.
What I admire most about my mom is her patience. She’s always calm and understanding, no matter the situation.
On Mother’s Day, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude. I wish her a Happy Mother’s Day and thank her for bringing me into this world and raising me with so much love.
To me, celebrating Mother’s Day is incredibly important because my mom is my most precious treasure, and there’s no one else like her.

Ayremeineil Ganya, 23, Student:
“For this year’s Mother’s Day, I plan to wish my mom a Happy Mother’s Day and help her tidy up the house so she can take a well-deserved rest.
I also intend to buy her a gift, such as flowers, and will ask my sister to help me prepare it.
What I admire most about my mom is her loving and patient nature.
On Mother’s Day, I want to tell her, ‘Thank you for always loving and taking care of me. I love you, Mom!’
I believe celebrating Mother’s Day is important because my mom has sacrificed so much for us. It’s the perfect time to show her love and appreciation.

Vanessa Chaca, 28, Kindergarten Teacher:
At our school, we celebrate Mother’s Day with activities like creating greeting cards and special song performances. Students are also invited to write short letters to their mothers and read them aloud in front of the class.
In class, we hold a sharing session where students talk about the sacrifices their mothers have made. Another activity is the creation of a ‘Tree of Love,’ where each student writes a message of appreciation on paper leaves and hangs them on the bulletin board.
The students are always so proud and earnest when sharing stories about their mothers’ love and greatness. Some even excitedly show off the cards or gifts they’ve prepared.
I believe when children learn to appreciate their mothers from an early age, it helps build stronger family bonds and encourages them to be more loving and responsible as they grow older.

Colina Iee, 50, Private Sector:
My children wrote me a deeply emotional letter, expressing their gratitude and how much they appreciate everything I do for them. I was incredibly touched and grateful. Even though the gift was small, it was filled with love and effort, making it the most meaningful present I could receive.
For me, Mother’s Day is a time to reflect on the sacrifices mothers make. It’s a moment to appreciate a mother who constantly offers love without expecting anything in return.
I will never forget the moment my children surprised me with a special Mother’s Day video message. It was deeply moving and a meaningful gesture I will always cherish.
