THIS Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Sarawakians are split between two worlds. Some are choosing tailor-made masterpieces that promise timeless style and durability. Others are turning to ready-to-wear outfits that offer instant trend appeal and online convenience. The choices reveal how personal style and practicality shape the way we celebrate.
Four Sarawakians spoke to Sarawak Tribune in an exclusive interview to share their Hari Raya fashion choices, revealing a mix of tradition, convenience, and social media influence.
Muzafar Tufail, 37, who lives abroad, prefers custom-made outfits for their personal touch and lasting quality. He travels back to Malaysia whenever possible to have his baju Melayu tailored.

“There is something meaningful about sitting with a tailor, choosing the fabric, and having something made specifically for you,” he said.
For Muzafar, a well-tailored baju Melayu is more than just festive wear.
“A good baju Melayu does not just serve one Raya. I have re-worn mine multiple times. The fit is better, it feels more personal, and it becomes part of your wardrobe rather than something worn once and forgotten,” he explained.
Although he is aware of social media trends, Muzafar chooses timeless pieces that suit his personal style.
“Social media can be inspiring, but personal style should reflect who you are, not just what is popular,” he said.
Living abroad has also made him more conscious of climate and practicality.
“Thicker fabrics may work elsewhere, but in Malaysia’s tropical weather, breathable materials make more sense. Sustainability is about thoughtful choices, wearing durable pieces over time, and adapting them to different settings,” he added.
His sister, Nurjas Tufail, 37, who also lives abroad, takes a different approach, opting for ready-to-wear outfits for convenience and accessibility.

“Ready-to-wear is much easier to source from overseas. There are plenty of affordable and beautiful options now,” she said.
Her budget remains under RM450 per outfit, similar to last year, and she typically buys one new piece while rewearing previous favourites. Social media strongly influences her selections.
“Most designers post photos and videos online of their collections. It is convenient to browse and pick what you like,” she added.
As a mother of two, Nurjas values convenience highly.
“I prefer online shopping. Having it delivered to your door is a huge plus, though sizing can be tricky. I always choose platforms with free returns.”
She also acknowledges the temptation of fast fashion.
“Sometimes it is unnecessary to buy new ones when my old clothes are fine, but with so many options today, it is hard to resist.”
Despite this, she tries to focus on quality and practical choices.
“I look for materials that are durable and can last multiple seasons, even if it means spending a little more upfront,” she said.
For 29-year-old Hakim Doreme, ready-to-wear is also the practical choice.

“It is less hassle than custom-made. There is no need to buy fabric or meet a tailor,” he said.
Rising prices have slightly increased his budget, which now starts at around RM150. TikTok trends influence him, particularly promotions and branded Raya outfits like Bulan Bintang. Hakim prefers shopping online to save time and avoid crowds.
“Online shopping is convenient, especially when stores are crowded during the festive season,” he said.
Comfort and coordinating with family are his top priorities, and he rewears outfits whenever possible, making sustainability a natural outcome of practicality.
Similarly, 34-year-old Mastijah Ahmad chooses ready-to-wear for its speed, modern designs, and practicality.

“My budget is around RM300 to RM500. I focus more on quality now rather than quantity,” she said.
Mastijah also looks to social media for inspiration but carefully selects what suits her style and budget.
“I want to look good but still feel comfortable wearing it throughout the day,” emphasising comfort as a deciding factor.
Mastijah also opts for timeless designs and durable fabrics to ensure she can wear the outfits again in future celebrations.
From timeless custom tailoring to trendy ready-to-wear pieces, Raya fashion blends tradition with modern convenience. While some invest in personalised craftsmanship, others embrace accessibility and trends. In the end, it is the smiles, the shared moments, and the family photos that turn any outfit into a story worth remembering, no matter how it was made.
