SIBU: Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has allocated RM260,000 to Sibu Hospital for facility upgrades, focusing on improving patient comfort and working conditions for healthcare personnel.

Tiong, who is also the Dudong assemblyman, said the funds will be used to install 37 air conditioners across five wards, upgrade three squat toilets to sitting toilets for better accessibility, and provide refrigerators for the hospital.

“This is to create a more conducive environment for both patients and medical staff. I have been informed that some central air-conditioning units are malfunctioning, making the wards uncomfortable and affecting hospital operations,” he said in a statement today (Mar 23).

To ensure reliable operation, the installation project will include an independent power supply to prevent disruptions due to electrical overloads.

Tiong pointed out the urgency of enhancing the hospital’s infrastructure, noting that air conditioning, proper toilet facilities, and refrigeration are essential for patient care and staff efficiency.

“Patients deserve to receive treatment in a comfortable setting, while a well-equipped environment allows medical personnel to focus on delivering quality care,” he added.

He also urged authorities to prioritise the maintenance and improvement of Sibu’s medical facilities to better serve the community.

Meanwhile, Sibu Hospital director Dr Nanthakumar Thirunavukkarasu expressed gratitude for the support, stating that the new air conditioners will help the hospital cope with the upcoming Gawai Dayak season’s heatwave.

“Last year, extreme heat caused significant discomfort for both patients and staff, affecting hospital operations. This initiative will greatly improve conditions and ensure uninterrupted medical services for the people of Sibu,” he said.
