KUCHING: Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has called on Malaysians to embrace unity, kindness and responsible governance as the year draws to a close, saying the Christmas season and the approaching New Year offer an important moment for reflection and renewal.

In his Christmas and New Year message, Tiong said the festive season is not only a time for celebration, but also an opportunity to reconnect with loved ones, express gratitude and reflect on values that sustain social harmony.

“Christmas, to me, is a season to reconnect with those closest to us and a time of gratitude. It invites us to exchange not only gifts, but presence, laughter and shared memories.

“Beyond celebration, it encourages stillness and reflection, reminding us that amid daily pressures, love and care remain essential,” he said.

Touching on the festive atmosphere nationwide, Tiong said Christmas decorations in public spaces and shopping centres symbolise more than celebration, as they foster shared experiences and bring people from different backgrounds together.

“As cultural symbols, they express collective joy and draw people from all walks of life closer together,” he said, noting that Malaysia’s multicultural harmony continues to be a source of national pride and a key attraction for visitors.

Tiong also stressed that harmony requires continuous effort, cautioning against the misuse of religious or cultural celebrations to sow division, hatred or racial and religious tension.

“By rejecting hate speech, choosing dialogue and practising tolerance, Malaysia strengthens trust within its diversity and builds unity through mutual respect,” he said.

Looking ahead to the New Year, Tiong said the transition marks a moment of renewal that calls for clarity, determination and confidence in facing future challenges.

“In times of change and uncertainty, clarity grounds us in purpose and gives us the courage to move forward,” he said.

On governance, Tiong acknowledged rising public expectations, and he said governments must remain open to feedback and committed to improvement.

“The government carries a responsibility to acknowledge shortcomings and listen closely to the people it serves. Only through honest reflection and continuous improvement can trust be strengthened and national progress sustained,” he said.
