SIBU: Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) President, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, has reminded political leaders not to lose sight of the fact that their positions are granted by the people and can be taken away just as easily.

The Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister said leaders must remain humble and accountable.

“We must not forget ourselves, as the same people who support us have the power to withdraw that support and remove us from our positions.

“I urge all parties, regardless of their affiliations – be it yellow, green, or white – to work together if we are to realise the mission and vision of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“Leaders in any party, including those in Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), must show real commitment to serving the people who placed their trust in us,” he said during the PDP Dudong Pre-Gawai celebration, attended by 2,000 people at a local hotel on Saturday night.

Tiong pointed out the importance of defending the rights of all communities, regardless of race or background, and ensuring balanced development, especially in rural areas.

He also called on GPS component parties to remain united and avoid attempts to undermine one another, warning that internal conflict would only benefit the opposition.

“No matter how big or small a party is, division among components weakens us. Leaders must respect one another.

“Let us learn from what happened in Peninsular Malaysia, where a long-standing coalition like Barisan Nasional is now in decline,” he added.

On the celebration itself, Tiong said such events, involving people of various races and backgrounds, are possible only because of the country’s harmony and unity.

He urged everyone to uphold these values and practise mutual respect to preserve peace and cohesion.
