BINTULU: In celebration of the first day of Gawai Dayak, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, joined his Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) team in visiting six longhouses across Kemena and Suai here.

The longhouses visited were Rumah Inggol Ranggong, Rumah Changgai Dali, Rumah Joe Merudi, Rumah Clarence Unjun, Rumah Ngalantar Sengaling, and Rumah Tulie Aji.

Each visit was filled with vibrant cultural displays and warm hospitality from the local residents.

“The Gawai celebration, which symbolises the end of the rice harvesting season, also serves as a heartfelt reunion for many,” said Tiong through a press statement today.

Children who live and work in distant towns and cities return home to reconnect with loved ones, partaking in traditional food, home-brewed ‘tuak’ and ‘langkau’, and the enchanting melodies of the ‘sape’.

“Gawai is not just about the harvest; it is a time for reunion. It is heartwarming to see Sarawakians from afar returning home, and to witness the genuine warmth of the longhouse community.

“I am deeply moved and proud of the spirit of unity and togetherness that defines our culture here in Sarawak,” he said.

Tiong also officiated the opening of the Women’s Bureau at Rumah Inggol during his visit.

In each longhouse, he took time to listen to the concerns of the residents, documenting every issue raised and pledging to do his best to help resolve them.

He urged the community to maintain close communication with his officers stationed in Bintulu to ensure swift and effective coordination.

“Though I am frequently occupied with ministerial duties outside Bintulu, I remain in constant contact with my local team.

“I want the people to know that I am always aware of the issues affecting them, and I will continue to take follow-up actions, coordinate efforts, and make informed decisions to address their concerns,” he added.

The Gawai celebration this year also saw participation from visitors from Peninsular Malaysia, particularly members of the Chinese community, who came to experience the unique Sarawakian Gawai traditions firsthand.

Their presence was warmly welcomed and celebrated.

“Cultural exchanges such as these play an important role in fostering national unity.

“They not only enhance mutual understanding and appreciation between communities from different regions but also lay the groundwork for a more harmonious and integrated multicultural society.

“Furthermore, these interactions can stimulate related sectors such as tourism, contributing to national prosperity and economic development,” he said.
