Tiong: Pickleball can boost health and local economy

SIBU: Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has stated that the sport of pickleball not only promotes health and wellness but also serves as an important platform for stimulating local economic growth.

He pointed out that tournaments like the Lanang Closed Pickleball Tournament 2025 attract participants from various places and drive the influx of supporters and spectators.

“Although pickleball is still an emerging sport in our country, it holds tremendous potential for growth and has gained popularity among people of various backgrounds and age groups,” he said in a speech read by his representative, Cr Paul Teo Ming Pao, during the opening ceremony of the competition held at Mycentre here recently, hosted by the Dudong Pickleball Club (DPC).

The tournament featured participation from various teams and players who also took a commemorative photo with distinguished guests, supporting organisations, and sponsors during the opening ceremony.

Tiong, who is also the Bintulu MP, noted that pickleball helps encourage a healthy lifestyle while also instilling teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship.

Through this tournament, he added that, the sport can be further promoted, providing more opportunities for local talents and strengthening interaction and connection within the community.

He expressed hope that with collective effort, the Dudong and Lanang areas can be developed into vibrant regions for recreational and sports activities.

As part of his support, Tiong, also the Dudong assemblyman, announced a RM10,000 contribution to DPC to encourage broader community participation in pickleball.

Meanwhile, DPC president Lo Ming Jun expressed hope that all participating teams and players would not only strive for success but also enjoy the game and demonstrate strong sportsmanship.
