SIBU: The sacrifices and perseverance of single mothers in raising their children to be useful individuals deserve recognition, said Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

According to him, the task of raising children alone in today’s challenging era is not an easy one.

“However, you have proven that with perseverance, love, and a spirit of not giving up, you are able to educate your children to be successful and useful individuals for the community and the country,” he said in a speech read by Councillor Paul Teo at the Central Region Single Mothers Association (PITWITS) Family Day and presentation of Student Excellence Awards ceremony held at a hotel here today.

Tiong, who is also Bintulu Member of Parliament, pointed out that associations like PITWITS play an important role as a platform for support – a place to voice concerns, share encouragement, and fight for the rights and welfare of single mothers.

He assured that he would always support noble efforts like this and advocate for more inclusive and comprehensive policies for single mothers in the country, especially in Sarawak.

He also congratulated all the students who received the Student Excellence Award at the ceremony, while expressing his appreciation to the mothers who were the backbone of their success.

“Academic achievement is an important step towards a bright future, but it is not everything. Noble values, good morals, and the search for the meaning of life also need to be given attention,” he said.

He added that the Family Day organised was not just about celebrating family ties, but also symbolic of the importance of the value of love in forming a harmonious society.

He hoped such programmes could be continued and expanded for the benefit of more single mothers and families throughout the state.

“I pray that single mothers continue to be strong, and that children succeed in their studies and lives. Every challenge we go through today is the foundation of strength and success in the future,” added Tiong, who is also Dudong Assemblyman.

Also present were PITWITS Chairperson, Tang Ku Mee, and organising chairperson, Seo Hui Mei.
