SIBU: The Jalan Pulau Dudong upgrading project has entered the tender stage, with authorities urged to expedite the process to allow works to begin early next year.
Dudong assemblyman Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said the project’s design drawings were completed following approval from the Public Works Department (PWD) in 2023, after several rounds of discussions since late 2022.
He expressed appreciation to the department for its review and approval, saying the project is expected to begin next year and take about two years to complete.
“I urge the relevant authorities to expedite the tendering and construction process so that residents can benefit from this upgraded road as soon as possible,” he said in a Facebook statement today (Nov 3).
The 7.5-kilometre road, which connects Jalan Salim/Jalan Stabau and the route to Sibu Airport, has long faced severe flooding and soil subsidence problems.
Recorded flood levels in the area have reached as high as 3.34 metres, with part of the stretch identified as a flood-prone zone.
Tiong said the upgrading works will raise the road level to mitigate recurring floods and improve structural stability affected by poor soil conditions.
He added the minimum road height will be 3.88 metres, while sections within the severe flood zone could reach up to 14 metres.
He expressed optimism that the upgraded road would enhance travel safety and accessibility for residents, particularly those from several longhouses along the stretch.
“The project will improve travel convenience and strengthen regional connectivity.
“Several longhouses are located along this stretch, and upon completion, it is expected to benefit over 300 residents by providing a safer and smoother route, reducing flood impacts, and stimulating local economic growth.
“I hope the project can commence soon so that residents may enjoy a safer and more comfortable road without further delay,” he said.
