KUCHING: As Advent enters its second week, the joy of Christmas carols once again permeate the air, being a cherished tradition for Christian families.

The weeks leading up to Christmas are a time of anticipation, reflection, and preparation for the celebration of Christ’s birth.

Carolling has become more than a seasonal ritual in that it brings families and congregations together, transforming homes, streets, and sanctuaries into spaces filled with melody and shared faith.

Sarawak Grace Assembly Church’s Senior Pastor, Nicholas Ningkau, said the purpose of carolling is basically to spread joy of Christmas to all, to proclaim the glory of Christ and to unite people through songs.

“Beyond its festive charm, carolling plays a meaningful role in reinforcing spiritual connection and communal identity,” he said.

“Singing familiar hymns and carols helps believers retell the nativity story, pass down traditions to younger generations, and foster unity during a season centred on hope and goodwill.

“For many, these songs become a reminder of the deeper purpose of Christmas, turning the act of singing into an expression of worship, joy, and collective anticipation.”

Advent, observed in the four weeks leading up to Christmas, marks the beginning of the Christian liturgical year and serves as a period of anticipation and spiritual preparation.
