KUCHING: Telekom Malaysia (TM) has committed to a direct communication channel with Kuching South City Council (MBKS), appointing a dedicated liaison to ensure missing manhole covers can be reported and repaired promptly.

Network Sarawak general manager Jafer Sadig Abdul Lathiff and TM general manager Abdul Rahman Taha recently briefed MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng on measures to tackle missing manhole covers.

Jafer said TM had intensified surveillance and inspections across Kuching South, enabling detection of missing or damaged covers and deploying crews to replace or secure sites.

“TM will provide MBKS with direct communication channels, including a dedicated contact person to facilitate reporting and coordination.

“This will allow the council to immediately alert TM whenever such incidents are discovered, ensuring swift replacement or repair work.

“TM also gave its commitment that all reported missing manhole covers will be addressed without delay, prioritising public safety and preventing potential accidents,” it said in a press statement.

It added that MBKS and TM also agreed to use the liaison channel for real-time coordination, with regular updates to shorten response times and document each rectification.

Meanwhile, Wee welcomed TM’s proactive posture as a responsibility to community wellbeing.

He stressed that such inter-agency collaboration is essential in maintaining the city’s infrastructure and ensuring that no issue is left unattended.

“Public safety is our priority, and by working closely with TM, we can respond faster, act more effectively, and prevent unnecessary risks to our community,” said Wee.
