KUCHING: Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How is keeping his political cards close to his chest — at least for now — remaining secretive on whether he will defend the Batu Lintang state seat in the next Sarawak state election.

The independent lawmaker, who has represented the constituency for three consecutive terms since 2011, has declined to confirm his intentions despite growing speculation among voters and political observers.

His cautious stance comes as discussions on potential candidates and party alignments is said to be slowly intensifying ahead of the eventual dissolution of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) that could happen this year.

When met by Sarawak Tribune recently, See neither confirmed nor denied plans to contest again, saying it is “premature” to talk about the election while the current DUN term is still ongoing.

He stressed that his immediate priority remains serving constituents and addressing local issues rather than engaging in early political manoeuvring.

See’s political journey has seen several turns over the years. He previously represented Batu Lintang under Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) before joining Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB), and later chose to serve as an independent representative.

His shift to independence drew attention statewide, positioning him as one of the few assemblymen operating outside major party lines.

Political observers believe See’s silence could be a strategic move to maintain flexibility as the political landscape evolves.

With party negotiations, alliance and candidate line-ups expected to intensify closer to the election period, keeping options open may work to his advantage.

For Batu Lintang residents, however, the uncertainty continues.

Until the DUN is officially dissolved and the election machinery begins rolling, See appears content to let speculation swirl, leaving supporters and rivals alike waiting for his next move.
