KUCHING: Tourist arrivals to the state have remained stable from January to March 2026 despite the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the situation has yet to significantly impact visitor numbers, though it continues to be closely monitored.
“Most of our visitors come from neighbouring countries, including Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia and Singapore.
“We just hope that tourist arrivals will remain steady despite the war and rising costs (prices). If these numbers can be maintained, I think there is no need to worry too much,” he said.
He said this in a media conference during The Programme for Serumpun Dinner (Finale) at the Sarawak Cultural Village (SCV) on April 1.
He also cautioned that airfares may increase as a result of the Middle East conflict, with adjustments expected not only from AirBorneo but also other airlines during this period.
He added that ticket prices are expected to increase, which may discourage people from flying for the time being until the issue is resolved.
“However, I believe that these changes, including in pricing, are only temporary as the war will eventually come to an end,” he added.
Responding to a question on any assistance plans for the tourism industry that may be affected during this period, Abdul Karim said such initiatives would depend on urgent needs.
“We will first assess how badly they are affected by rising fuel price and of course, the Federal government is also looking into the matter,” he said.
