SRI AMAN: The Sarawak Traffic Games (STG) serves not only as a competition but also as a hands-on learning platform to promote road safety awareness among students, says Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin.
Lee said the programme exposes students to real-life traffic situations, including police enforcement and penalties for rule violations.
He noted that the initiative continues the legacy of the former Shell Traffic Games introduced in 1963, which ended in 2015.
“I am very proud to see this legacy revived in 2024 under the Ministry of Transport as the Sarawak Traffic Games.
“Some participants even cried after receiving summonses during the games, but this emotional experience leaves a lasting impression on the importance of obeying traffic laws,” he said when officiating at the STG- Sri Aman Edition 2025 held at Sri Aman Traffic Park recently.
He added that road safety education must begin early, as children are not only future drivers but also current road users.
Held alongside the STG Sri Aman 2025 was the Road Safety Speech Competition, aimed at fostering students’ confidence, critical thinking, and communication skills on safety issues.
This year’s edition saw participation from 10 primary and secondary schools across the Sri Aman Division, including SK Abang Aing, SK St Luke, SMK Lingga, and SMK Sri Aman.
In conjunction with the event, the Sri Aman Traffic Park received a RM150,000 upgrade funded by the Ministry of Transport. It now stands among six major traffic parks in the state — alongside those in Kuching, Sibu, Sarikei, Bintulu, and Miri.
