Training to ensure efficiency in facing disasters

KUCHING: Training on disaster management called ‘Sarawak level D’MEX 2018’ organised by Malaysia Fire and Rescue Services Daepartment (JBPM) held at Samajaya Industrial Estate last Saturday morninig was meant to ensure efficiency of the agencies involved in facing any eventuality.

Director of Sarawak BOMBA, Khirudin Drahman said the training involved the co-ordination of the agencies involved namely Police (PDRM), National Safety Council (MKN), Chemistry Department, Civil Defence Force (APM), Health Department and Malaysia Airport Holdings Berhad (MAHB).

The disaster scene of the drill was at Samajaya Industrial Estate near here where a plane had crashed.

The disaster which happened at 8 am caused jet fuel and chemicals to spill while an office building and factory were also ablazed.

Ten passengers were seriously injured in the crash with burns and were immediately taken to Sarawak General Hospital for further treatment.

Search and rescue (SAR) teams suspected that more vicitms would be found and were ready for any eventualitiy.

Khirudin added that the main objective of the training was to test the level of effeciency of the standard operating procedure (SOP) of all the agencies involved in facing large scale disaster and emergency.

“To date the traning is still ongoing by various agencies to rescue the ‘victims’ in the tragedy. This is an annual event to ensure the agencies are ready to face disaster and emergency at anytime,” Khirudin said when contacted.

The closing ceremony of the ‘Sarawak level D’MEX 2018’ was officiated at be Director General of JBPM, Mohd Hamdan Wahid.
