KUCHING: Translation must be recognised as a crucial instrument of cultural diplomacy and national development.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said It plays a vital role in shaping cross-cultural experiences, including the upcoming operations of Sarawak’s own airline, AirBorneo.
“With AirBorneo soon connecting Sarawak to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta and Hong Kong, translation becomes a critical cross-cultural diplomacy tool, especially for passengers from diverse linguistic backgrounds,” he said,
He made these rematks in a speech delivered on his behalf by the Deputy Minister for Women, Childhood and.Community Development, Datuk Mohammad Razi Sitam at the opening of the 20th International Translation Conference here today.
He emphasised that quality translation would not only enhance passenger experience but also would ensure Sarawak can project its cultural richness professionally to the world.
“Translation is not merely about words. It is cultural translation that conveys the right message across different contexts, giving travellers a world-class experience,” he added
Furthermore, he said, quality translation can provide a world-class cultural experience, delivering messages appropriately across different cultural contexts.
“I do not see translation as merely a tool of communication, but as a strategic driver of the Sarawak government’s development plans.
“This includes facilitating cooperation with foreign investors, access to quality modules and training,” he stressed.
He added that the state government’s investment in professional translation training and linguistic technology is part of the intellectual infrastructure that supports Sarawak’s goals across multiple sectors, both nationally and internationally.
“The Sarawak government remains committed to advancing education and research, including in the fields of language and translation.
“Among others, we have established various institutions and strengthened collaborations with universities to ensure that knowledge development benefits all citizens,” he said.
He also praised Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and its Faculty of Education, Language and Communication, together with the Malaysian Translators Association (PPM), Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), and the Institute of Translation and Books Malaysia (ITBM), for hosting the 20th International Conference on Translation.
The three-day conference has gathered over 250 participants from China, Indonesia, Singapore, Italy, Brunei, Korea and Malaysia
“Efforts like this strengthen academic networks and build strategic collaboration between local and international institutions.
“They enrich the field of translation and deepen intercultural understanding, which is essential for global harmony,” he said.
Looking ahead, the Premier expressed hope that Sarawak will produce more professional translators capable of contributing to the global stage, positioning translation not just as communication, but as a driver of diplomacy, education and economic growth.
