KUCHING: The Transport Ministry (MOT) will explore opportunities for its maritime officers to benefit from world-class training at the International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) in Malta.

Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the initiative would strengthen Sarawak’s maritime sector by enhancing regulatory capacity and expanding the state’s role in international maritime affairs.

“Maritime law knowledge and international exposure will support Sarawak’s aspirations to strengthen its maritime sector, enhance regulatory capacity, and advance Sarawak’s role in international maritime affairs,” he said in a statement after receiving a courtesy visit from IMLI Director, Professor Dr Norman A. Martínez Gutiérrez on Friday.

During the meeting, Martínez outlined possible pathways for Sarawak’s participation, either through Malaysia’s national quota under the Marine Department of Malaysia (Jabatan Laut Malaysia) or directly as Sarawak nominees.

He also assured that a seat would be reserved for Sarawak under IMLI’s programmes, adding that Sarawakian officers would greatly benefit from the institute’s training opportunities.

Established under the International Maritime Organization (IMO), IMLI is a globally recognised institution specialising in maritime law.

Its programmes have produced lawyers and experts who serve in maritime administration, international shipping, and policy formulation worldwide.

Currently, IMLI offers two master’s programmes lasting 14 months and six specialised short courses conducted over three months.

Under IMO’s framework, donor Member States, including Malaysia, are entitled to one seat per year in either a master’s programme or a short course.

The courtesy visit reflects Sarawak’s continuous efforts to strengthen international partnerships in the maritime sector.
