Trio arrested for drink driving in Padawan, Sarikei

KUCHING: Traffic police arrested three men for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol in different districts of the state last Saturday (June 24).

According to the Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, the operation codenamed ‘Op Mabuk’ was held simultaneously in Padawan and Sarikei.

Roadblocks were conducted along Jalan Kuching-Serian in Padawan and Jalan Repok in Sarikei, involving a total of 21 personnel from the districts’ traffic police divisions.

During the operation, police arrested three drivers – two in Sarikei and one in Padawan on suspicion of drink driving.

“All three were taken to the respective traffic police offices to undergo breath analyser tests.

“Results found that they had alcohol content in their body exceeding the allowable limit,” the department said.

The suspects will be investigated under Section 45A (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for a maximum fine of RM10,000 or up to five years in jail and disqualification from driving for up to five years.

Police also issued a total of 24 summonses for various traffic offences after inspecting a total of 89 vehicles – 43 cars, 27 motorcycles, 10 multi-purpose vehicles and nine pick-up trucks.

The department said similar operations will be conducted from time to time to combat drunk drivers.
