SIBU: Three local men believed to be linked with multiple cable thefts in the district, were busted by a police patrol team along Jalan Salim last Saturday (Aug 9).

The suspects, aged between 28 and 34, were caught red-handed pulling cables from a concrete drain at around 6.15 pm.

Sibu police chief ACP Zulkpli Suhaili said a patrol team from Sibu central police station spotted the men behaving suspiciously before realising that they were in the act of stealing cables.

“The team quickly detained the suspects, who have prior records related to drug offences.

“Also seized from them were a Proton Saga, nine tools believed to have been used for stealing cables, 15 gunny sacks, and two face masks,” he said, adding that the arrests have helped solve at least five cable theft cases in the district.

All three suspects have been remanded for four days until Aug 14 to facilitate investigations under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft.

If convicted, the offence provides for imprisonment of up to seven years, a fine, or both.

Zulkipli urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to authorities in order to curb crime in their areas.
