KUCHING: The Sarawak Tropical Peat Research Institute (TROPI) has been appointed as Malaysia’s exclusive partner in the Nitrous Oxide Budgets in Peatlands international project.
Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said this collaboration involves the deployment of a MIRO Multicompound Gas Analyser System at a field site in February 2025, to continuously monitor greenhouse gas fluxes, specifically nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, and methane.
“To address data transmission challenges from the remote location, the MIRO system is integrated with Starlink satellite internet, enabling real-time, digitised data transfer to TROPI’s repository.

“This setup allows TROPI researchers to continuously access, monitor, and analyse GHG flux data, significantly improving the efficiency and responsiveness of their monitoring efforts,” he said.
He said this in his ministerial winding-up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today (May 26).
Sagah said TROPI significantly contributed to global scientific discourse on peatland conservation and sustainable development, representing Sarawak to speak at major international forums such as the International Soil Science Conference 2025, the European Geosciences Union General Assembly (EGU2025), the International Peatland Society Annual Convention 2025, and the 12th INTECOL Wetlands Conference.
“I wish to congratulate Datuk Dr Lulie Melling who was conferred The Research Fellow Award by the Malaysian Society of Soil Science.
“It is a notable recognition for distinguished members of the society who have made significant contributions to the field of soil science and agriculture,” he said.
