KAPIT: The construction of a seven-kilometre road to Tunoh here has been approved to enable long-delayed development in the area.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state government approved the project as road connectivity had been the key barrier holding back development in the area for years.
“For Tunoh to be developed, we must first build the necessary road access. Therefore, we have approved the construction of a seven-kilometre road connecting Tunoh, which will allow us to carry out the resettlement programme and develop new longhouses in Tunoh.
“This matter actually originated long ago during the late Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing’s time.
“So today, I said, ‘Why has it taken so long?’ It turns out there were issues before, but now all problems have been resolved and we can proceed with developing the area,” said Abang Joahri.
He said this in his speech during the ‘Majlis Merarau Bersama Komuniti Kapit’ held at Kapit Civic Centre here today.
The Premier also announced the approval of funding for the Bakun-Belaga access road and the construction of a jetty in the area.
The infrastructure will support new economic activities, including the development of a solar farm in Bakun.
“For Bakun and Belaga, we have agreed to build the access road and jetty. The cost is quite high, but we have approved the allocation so that new activities, including a solar farm, can be developed there,” he said.
Additionally, he said a new village will be built to provide more comfortable housing for local communities, particularly those involved in river-based activities.
“These developments are part of our efforts to ensure rural communities enjoy better living conditions and improved access,” he added.
