KUCHING: Sarawak Media Group (SMG) has launched ‘The Human Odyssey’, a six-part original documentary series by TVS tracing the origins of humanity in Southeast Asia and Borneo through archaeological discoveries at the Niah Caves.
The series was premiered at the Auditorium, Borneo Cultures Museum, today, with the screening centred on episode four, ‘The Deep Skull Enigma’, which revisits the iconic Deep Skull find at Niah Cave and its role in reshaping understanding of Southeast Asia’s place in human evolution.
SMG’s Chief Executive Officer, Kushairi Abang, said the series traces ancient migration routes, explores Malaysia’s earliest people, and uncovers discoveries at the Niah Caves, from the mystery of the Deep Skull to the Neolithic communities that followed.
The six episodes span from ancient crossroads of early human migration to the possibilities offered by modern archaeology, revealing how Southeast Asia, and Sarawak in particular, has shaped the wider human story, he said.
Kushairi said the production was made possible through the knowledge and support of archaeologists, historians, museum professionals, and researchers who have dedicated their lives to preserving shared heritage.
Through the series, he said TVS hopes to bring history beyond museums and academic journals, making it accessible and meaningful to audiences of all ages, describing it as part of the broadcaster’s commitment to producing distinctive Sarawak stories with the potential to reach regional and international audiences.
“May this documentary encourage us to look more closely at our past, appreciate the richness of our heritage and recognise Sarawak’s important place in the continuing story of humanity,” he said.
The event was attended by Datuk Dr Rashidah Bolhassan, representing Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, along with SMG’s Chairman Datin Norhyati Ismail, SMG Board Member Datuk Ahmad Shafiee Abdul Yaman, and Sarawak Museum Department’s Director Anielia Siam.
