Two arrested in under an hour over cable theft

SIBU: Two local men, believed to be behind a RM60,000 theft, were tracked down and arrested in lightning-fast fashion – within 45 minutes of the report.

The incident happened last Friday after a 32-year-old man lodged a report at 8:45 am regarding the loss of cable wires and two water pumps worth RM60,000 at Medan Hotel area.

At around 9:30 am, the motorcycle patrol unit (URB) managed to locate and apprehend the duo, aged 30 and 44.

Sibu Police Chief, ACP Zulkipli Suhaili, said their arrest led officers to two gunny sacks filled with copper that had been stripped from stolen cable wires.

Background checks found that the suspects had numerous prior records related to crimes and drugs.

They have been remanded for four days until November 26 to facilitate investigations under Section 457 of the Penal Code, which carries up to 14 years’ imprisonment, a fine or whipping, if convicted.

Members of the public are urged to continue sharing information on suspicious activities to help police curb crime in the district.
