Two arrested, syabu worth over RM8,000 seized

KUCHING: Narcotics police arrested two local men and seized 75.60 grammes (g) of suspected syabu in separate locations last Monday.

Kuching Police Chief, ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, said the raids took place in Tabuan Dusun at 12:20 pm and in Stampin Baru at 8:10 pm.

“In the first raid, the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division (NCID) arrested a 39-year-old man and seized 5.10 g of suspected syabu worth RM561.

“In the second operation, the Sarawak NCID detained a 46-year-old man and seized 70.50 g of suspected syabu valued at RM7,750,” he said.

Both tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine. Police confirmed neither of them had any prior drug-related records.

The 39-year-old suspect has been remanded for three days until July 12, while the 46-year-old suspect is under a five-day remand until July 14 to assist with investigations.

Alexson said the first suspect is being investigated under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a jail term of up to five years and a maximum of nine strokes of the cane, upon conviction.

The second suspect is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides for the mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment.

If not sentenced to death, the offender is liable to at least 12 strokes of the cane.
