KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Civil Defence Force (APM) will set up two Baywatch units in two popular beaches soon.

APM State Disaster Operations director Abdul Wahab Rahim said the two units will be built at Pantai Esplanade in Miri and Damai Beach in Santubong near here.

“Personnel who will be assigned to the units have just completed their training two months ago,” Abdul Wahad told reporters yesterday.

He said having undergone training means the men are prepared for water rescue and general safety of the beaches they are assigned to.

According to him, areas of the respective beaches have been divided into zones. Each zone, covering a radius of 50 metres, will be manned

by eight personnel who are equipped with assets such as lifejackets, jet skis and a

watchtower.

“We will assess our operations from time to time and from there we will consider extending our services to other popular beaches in the state,” Abdul Wahab said.

Abdul Wahab pointed out that from 2015 to May this year, the state APM recorded 62 cases of beach incidents, including drowning cases.

“Our hope is that once this Baywatch initiative is in place, incidents like these will never recur,” he added.
