TATAU: A dinner gathering turned tragic when two men died and four others fell ill from suspected food poisoning at a farm hut in Sungai Salik, Mayeng Kakus on Sunday (Nov 9).

The incident occurred at 7.30 pm when a group of seven men were having dinner consisting of cooked ‘umbut rotan’ (rattan shoots), which they had gathered from a nearby farm.

Tatau police chief DSP Jame Reis said about an hour after the meal, all of them started experiencing stomach pain and vomiting.

“With assistance from nearby villagers, the group were rushed to Tatau Health Clinic for treatment.

“Two of them, aged 31 and 58, were pronounced dead at the clinic, while three others aged between 30 and 40 were treated as outpatients.

“Another 30-year-old victim was later referred to Nyabau Hospital in Bintulu for further treatment,” he said.

Preliminary investigation indicate that the victims likely suffered food poisoning after consuming ‘umbut rotan’ (scientifically known as calamus castaneus), which is believed to contain a high levels of natural toxins dangerous to humans.

Jame added that physical examination of both deceased found no injuries or signs of foul play, and their bodies were taken to Nyabau Hospital for post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death.

Members of the public are strongly advised not to speculate on the incident and to contact Tatau police station chief Sgt Rafiziezuan Mohd Yakop at 016-5254225 for any enquiries.
