Two dead as lorry plunges into ravine

BETONG: A lorry driver and his attendant were killed when the lorry they were in plunged into a ravine along KM7, Jalan Lubok Antu-Sri Aman yesterday (May 20).

Lubok Antu police chief DSP Victor Ripon said the accident is said to have happened around 3.50 pm when the lorry was transporting an excavator from Lemanak Engkilili to Lubok Antu junction.

“The lorry is believed to have swerved out of control and plunged into a ravine by the road.

“As a result, the driver and his attendant aged 32 and 44, were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics,” he said, adding that their bodies were taken to Sri Aman Hospital for post-mortem procedures.

Victor said the case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Last night, firefighters from Betong station were dispatched to the scene after receiving a distress call.

However, upon arrival, they noticed the victims had been rescued from the wrecked vehicle by workers from a nearby timber camp.
