Two fined RM8,300 for drug use

KUCHING: Two friends have been ordered to pay a combined fine of RM8,300 for consuming dangerous drugs, with a default jail term of 26 months.

Both will also undergo police supervision for two years upon completing their sentences.

Hilwan Nen, 36, faced two separate charges for consuming amphetamine and methamphetamine.

The first offence occurred on June 13, 2022, while the second was on Nov 27, 2023.

In the first case, Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan sentenced him to a fine of RM2,300 or six months’ imprisonment, along with two years’ supervision.

For the second offence, Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan imposed a RM3,000 fine or 10 months’ imprisonment, with two years of post-sentence supervision.

His friend, Mohammad Shafik Hasbi, 26, was charged with self-administering amphetamine and methamphetamine on Mar 3, 2022.

Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan sentenced him to a RM3,000 fine or 10 months’ imprisonment, followed by two years of supervision.

All cases were verified through urine tests conducted at the Sarawak General Hospital, which confirmed the presence of the prohibited substances listed under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The prosecutions were handled by Deputy Public Prosecutor Chuah Kai Sheng and DPP Ahmad Fauzultfi Suriani, while the arrests and initial investigations were conducted by officers from the Kuching Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID).
