MANADO, Indonesia: A joint search and rescue (SAR) team on Saturday successfully recovered two traditional gold miners who were buried by a landslide in Entana Mahamu Hamlet, Sangihe Islands District, North Sulawesi, reported news agency ANTARA.
The team, comprising members from Basarnas, the TNI (Indonesian National Armed Forces), the Polri (Indonesian National Police), local government officials, and community members, carried out the operation.
The two miners, Jatri Lomboh and Victor Luis Pontoh, were buried by the landslide on Friday.
Before midnight, the team began a manual excavation using water pumps to rescue the victims.
Unfortunately, both miners were found deceased. Jatri Lomboh was located at 9:32 pm local time, and Victor Luis Pontoh was found shortly after at 10:13 pm.
“Following the recovery, their bodies were handed over to their families,” Public Relations Officer of the Manado SAR OfficeNuriadin Gumelengsaid on Saturday.
He highlighted the high risks associated with landslides at traditional mining sites, urging the public to be more cautious and vigilant. – BERNAMA-ANTARA
