BINTULU: A lorry driver and his passenger were killed in a tragic two-vehicle collision near the Sungai Asap junction yesterday (June 23).
The victims, identified as Ling Kwan Hian and Nicholas Sigo, both aged 40, were travelling in a three-tonne lorry when it collided with a five-tonne lorry laden with stones around 8.35 am.
According to the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), the impact of the crash caused both lorries to overturned down a roadside slope, trapping the two men in the smaller vehicle.
The driver of the other lorry was reportedly not present at the scene when rescuers arrived.
Firefighters from Belaga station, with assistance from an excavator, worked to extricate the victims from the wreckage. Paramedics later confirmed that both men had died at the scene.
Their bodies were handed over to the police for further action.
Once the situation was deemed safe, the rescue operation concluded at 2.48 pm and firefighters then made their way back to the station, located about 85km away.
