KUCHING: Two people were killed and six others, including an infant, were injured in a single-vehicle accident at Bukit Sabal Tapang along Jalan Serian-Sri Aman today.

The accident involved a Toyota Avanza carrying eight people.

According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), they received a distress call at 9.37 am. Firefighters from the Simunjan station, with assistance from Serian, were dispatched to the scene, located some 54km away.

“Upon arrival, it was found that two women were unconscious in a drain and were later pronounced dead by medical officers from Serian Hospital.

“Six others — comprising three men, two women, and a baby boy — sustained injuries but remained conscious,” the department said.

The department added that two women and a man were thrown out of the vehicle, while two other women were trapped inside.

“Meanwhile, two men and the baby boy were rescued by members of the public before firefighters arrived,” it said.

Firefighters used special equipment to extricate the trapped victims before handing them over to medical personnel and the police for further action.

They also carried out flushing works at the accident site before concluding the operation at 10.53 am.
